Bio

Described as bold, charismatic, and memorable, Chinese Kiwi violinist Elvina Liu redefines the classical violinist archetype. Her striking presence in performance transcends all boundaries — as a classical, contemporary, free jazz violinist, and improviser, Elvina captivates an international audience with her unforgettable, intoxicating sound.

Inspired by a performance of The Lark Ascending, Elvina picked up violin at nearly eight years old. At nine, Elvina had her orchestra solo debut with an audience of 1000 listeners. Her love for the spotlight blossomed through performing in local festivals, which evolved into international engagements throughout North America and Europe. Across cities such as Auckland, Cremona, New York, and Weimar, Elvina worked with world-class teachers such as Mauricio Fuks, Ioana Cristina Goicea, Midori Goto, Ani Kavafian, and Kurt Sassmannshaus.

Elvina’s passion for non-classical music bloomed simultaneously. Elvina frequented the theatre as a pit violinist and covered music for public functions. As a high schooler, Elvina befriended the drummer of a local amateur band, collaboratively covering metalcore songs. With her eclectic musicality and feel, Elvina became the band’s main reference points for feedback and suggestions in their early days of songwriting. The band, Crooked Royals, has since become one of New Zealand’s most internationally successful artists.
